Friday through Monday I participated in Ludum Dare 34, a 72-hour video game development event, my first such event. It was great learning about teamwork and tight deadlines, quick design, and finding and sticking to the core of a game.
A theme was announced at the beginning of the event, which all games were to follow, so I had to design fast. The theme was growth, and initially my ideas were of physical growth, plants or giants. But I wanted to tell a meaningful story, so I switched to thinking of psychological growth, and decided that we grow psychologically by defeating internal demons, which easily transitioned to a game idea. Luckily I found a great team with complimentary skills, and we were able to deliver a finished product.
